Homemade Halloween Party Decorations – Fun and Easy

  • July 13, 2010 10:21 pm

Halloween is one of those times of the year when children enjoy getting as creative as they want, creating what they consider funny, or scary decorations, and nobody can say any different. it is also a time when families can get together to make a variety of different holiday themes, from costume parties, get-togethers, and every one helps in the decorating.

There are many party decorations that are fun and easy to do. One of them is making giant, or monster foot prints out of large cheap sponges. you can use stencils, or just free hand with markers, cut out the shape of the foot print, and use a shallow pan with some non toxic washable paint, and make footprints going up to your door, along the wall, or just about any place else. you simply flip the sponge over to make the other foot print.

Instead of wasting a punch of pumpkins buy carving them up, use colored markers to draw faces on the outside. This is much safe for smaller children, and you can let them be as creative as you want. you can always open them up later and get the seeds out, or use them to make pumpkin pies for dessert, without the pumpkin rotting and going to waste. One unique idea, for a change of pace, is use large bell peppers to carve as Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns. you can also get them in a variety of different colors, to make things even more festive.

Another fun and cool idea is to make hanging bats from cardboard egg cartons. all you need are a few cartons, some black crafting paint, some googley eyes, and some black yarn, or invisible thread. Cut the egg holder part of the carton into four equal pieces, with three sections each, then cut the bat wings out of both sides of the end sections. Paint them black, let dry and then glue on the eyes. for the string, simply use a nail, screw or thumbtack to make a hole at the top, slide the thread through. you can tie the end around something to act as a stopper, and there you go!

You can also use Halloween shaped cookie cutters for a number of Halloween decorating ideas, not just for cutting out cookie shapes. all you need are the cutters, a washable ink marking pen, and some heavy duty construction paper, in Halloween colors. Starting at one side of the paper, trace around the cutters, until the page is filled, then cut them out. you can tape them to what ever surfaces you want, or have them hanging down as well.

There are many more Halloween party decorating ideas to choose from, many more than can be mentioned here. there are assortments of books on the subject, as well as numerous websites, 90% of which are totally free to download and print up at your leisure. there are also templates that you can order, stencils, as well as many other helpful tips and information to give you creative Halloween ideas for years to come.

Halloween Decorating Tips – Spooky Fun and a Tree for Halloween?

  • July 6, 2010 1:21 am

Halloween is a time when anyone can be a kid at heart. You can celebrate the spookiest holiday of them all to your heart’s content without having to break the bank in the process. with a little thought, you can create great-looking Halloween decorations. You’re limited only by your imagination.

Spooky Halloween Decorating Tips

Halloween can be a wonderful time for decorating, since it’s so different from any other holiday, and it has really taken off as a chance to let people’s imaginations run wild over the past few years. here are a few ideas for adding some spooky Halloween spirit to your home:

You can easily make a very attractive display by carving holes in apples the size of votive candles and then allowing the candles to float in a large glass punch bowl, galvanized metal bucket, or tub. it can be especially effective when all the lights are dimmed.

If you’re having a Halloween get-together, you can keep the punch cold by freezing water in a rubber glove and then adding it to the punch bowl. it will effectively keep the punch from getting too warm while adding a wonderfully macabre touch to your table decorations.

Another fun thing you can do to dress up your punch bowl is to add plastic spiders and other creepy crawly things to your ice cubes by simply adding them to the water when you put your ice cube trays in the refrigerator. They’ll add a nice eerie touch of holiday spookiness to your Halloween party.

On the outside of your home, make sure to add plenty of dry leaves around the porch. their crunch and dead looks will make your Halloween decorations even more convincing, lending a haunted-house look to your holiday décor.

A Tree for Halloween?

Another unusual, but effective decoration is a Halloween tree. Manufacturers turn out strings of outdoor lights for almost every holiday nowadays, so it won’t be hard to find orange lights and other spooky decorations for your tree. just check your local home improvement center or large department store. Your kids will also have a wonderful time helping to create skeletons, bats, witches, and all the other assorted characters that have a special place at Halloween time to hang on your tree. Take a standard artificial Christmas tree as your starting point and then let your imagination run wild.

If you have railings on your porch, you can also find Halloween-colored garland to thread through the rails at the same store where you found your Halloween lights for the tree. it can be especially potent when combined with your spookily decorated Halloween tree.

There’s an ever increasing variety of Halloween-related decorating choices to add spookiness to your holiday décor. You can put a special welcome mat in front of your door, you can get stick-on figures for your windows, you can get motion sensitive manikins that will make scary noises and move around when someone gets too close, and you can even buy fog machines to turn your front porch into one of the spookiest places in town on Halloween night.

Your decorations don’t need to be expensive, however. even small touches like painting river rocks along your walkway orange and adding figures or phrases like “boo” can help add to the overall ambience of your Halloween decorating. If you have a tall tree branch hanging in your garden, hang a stuffed sheet “ghost” and attach it to a hidden rope. have someone hide and pull the rope back and forth to make the ghost move.

The bottom line: have fun with it. Halloween may be thought of as a children’s holiday, but it can make for some of the most fun decorating that an adult can do every year!

Getting a Jump Start on Your Christmas Shopping in 2009

  • July 5, 2010 1:21 pm

Christmas shopping is one of the most stressful, all consuming chores of the year and yet it seems to always sneak up on you. after 10 or 11 long months of peace and quiet, the malls fill up, the lights go up, and the season is upon us. but, Christmas doesn’t need to be a stressful, painful time this year. Instead, you can spend less money, get your shopping done earlier, and relax in those busy weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas for a change. here are a few tips to help you get there.

Stop going to the Stores

Shopping online is a great option for most items on your holiday gift lists. Buying toys, electronics, books, and novelty items online can save you time and money. A lot of great deals can be found online. This isn’t the best way to shop for everything on your list, but you can take care of a lot of holiday shopping this way.

Also, most online retailers offer free shipping on orders over a certain size. It’s not too hard to meet these minimums, especially if you’re buying for several people at once. if you’re buying gifts for people you’re not going to be seeing over the holidays, or who live far away, you can have their presents shipped directly to them. often you can even have them gift wrapped before they’re shipped. just make sure you place your orders early enough so that you don’t wind up paying extra for expedited shipping.

Get Christmas Lists Early

The earlier you know what those special people on your list want, the earlier you can go out and get it. It’s as simple as that. getting the bulk of your holiday shopping done early will allow you to avoid those crazy holiday crowds, as well as significantly reducing your stress as the holidays get closer. that way, you can sit back and enjoy the holiday season instead of fighting the crowds at the malls.

Skip the big Shopping Days

Sure there are good deals to be had on the traditional major holiday shopping days. The truth is though that there are often better deals available during one day sales and other holiday promotions put on by individual retailers. In fact, most of the major deals on Black Friday are reserved for a few big items.

Plus, fighting the crowds to save a few dollars often really isn’t worth it. if you’ve planned ahead and done a significant amount of your shopping online already, you can hit some one day sales later on in the holiday shopping season. You’ll likely wind up spending less money overall because you won’t be making rushed and impulsive purchases just to get one more name crossed off either.

If you plan carefully, skip the busy, painful days in the stores, and stop worrying about getting that one ideal gift that your kids want, you will not only have a much happier Christmas, but your family will be able to relax with you and enjoy it that much more.

Halloween Cupcake Ideas

  • July 2, 2010 7:21 pm

I like to use Halloween cupcake ideas when I am decorating my cupcakes. It’s never too early to begin planning your Halloween party menu…I find new ideas all year long. Sometimes I find a great, scary food idea in a magazine or cookbook. Some I find on web sites and some I actually discover as I am making a new recipe for my family. Any time I see a new food or spice I can use with my Halloween cupcake decorating ideas I write it in the Halloween section of my recipe file…and I put it right on the first card in that section so I know exactly where my new decorating ideas are. I used to stick it in the file under the food name, but I couldn’t remember where I put it when I wanted to try using it in a gory looking food dish.

I love cupcakes and that’s why I always focus on them for my Halloween desserts. They are quick, easy, fun to make and easy to find decorating ideas for. you can use candy, bubble gum, or store bought decorations to make a fun dessert for your costume party. your party guests will be so amazed when they see the scary food ideas you have combined to make the worst, best Halloween buffet table they have ever seen!

Scary cupcake ideas are simple. How about making a giant spider on top, or a one eyed monster…like in Monsters vs Aliens! there are great tools to use when you are decorating cupcakes. Picks with a funny or scary ghost on them or a picture of your favorite monster, like Frankenstein or Count Dracula. there are also fairies, like Tinkerbell, or cute little pumpkins. these picks are very easy to use, just insert them into your cake. You’re done…see how easy it is.

There are also edible images you can buy. these edible images are made on frosting or rice paper and you can put any picture or character you like on them. you just place these on the frosted cake and once again, you are done. Another very easy cupcake decorating idea and you don’t even have to know what your doing to make these look great! you can buy little plastic spiders, or spiders made out of sugar, if you really like the spider idea.

One of my favorite and fun cupcake decorating ideas is to make your own design out of candies you can buy at the corner store. Chocolate chips or M & M’s make great eyes, or if you like they sell gummy eyeballs around Halloween, so use them. They look great. you can use red frosting or gel in a tube to make your eyeball cupcake look like it’s a little bloodshot. That will make it look scarier. you can use a mini vanilla wafer coated in chocolate as a spider body and some black string licorice as spider legs.

The best part is once you begin to design your own cupcakes, whether you use picks, edible toppers or candies, you get more ideas on how to do things. Stick pretzels become legs, white icing with a chocolate chip in the middle becomes an eye…before you know it, you are going to see cupcake decorating ideas everywhere!

Go bake a batch of cupcakes, get some candies and frosting and see what you can come up with. It’s fun, it’s cheap and it’s a great way to spend some real quality time with your kids. by the time October rolls around you are going to have so many Halloween cupcake ideas, you are going to have to sign up as your kid’s Class Mother and host some school parties, to use all your ideas!

We all know kids can be demanding. So how do you keep them happy when offering your face painting services at parties, school fetes and fund raising events? Easy, follow these face painting ideas.

1 You Don’t need A Model To Practice Face Painting Designs

Kids don’t take long to lose interest if you take too long or have to wipe off paint and start again. So practicing on kids may not be a viable option.

So why not practice on clear acetate. It’s available from office supply stores. If you make a mistake you just wipe off the paint with a damp sponge. it can be used over and over again.

2 have A Photo Album Filled With The Designs You can Paint

Every time you are pleased with a new design that you have created, take a photo (with permission, of course) and add it to your face painting ideas photo album.

3 Stick To Simple Designs

If you take too long to face paint then kids will just get bored and start fidgeting. Stick to simple face painting designs that can be created quickly and easily.

4 Avoid Painting very Young Children

A child under the age of two and a half generally cannot sit still long enough to have their face painted. So for very young children use a face dotter stamp and special face painting ink pad. it only takes seconds to get a design onto the cheeks and forehead. popular designs include butterfly, spider, paw print, dolphin and snowflake.

5 Avoid Face Paint near The Mouth If The Kids Will Be Eating Afterwards

If kids will be eating shortly after getting their faces painted it’s best to avoid painting too close to the mouth. that way the kids can enjoy their food without spoiling their painted faces.
