Sick of winter yet? Tired of being snowed in? While there is nothing we can do about the weather, you can pass the time more quickly by transporting yourself and your friends to a hot and ancient land by hosting an ancient Egyptian theme party.

Kids are fascinated by mummies and pyramids while adults are even more intrigued by Cleopatra’s beauty, love affairs and legendary reputation. An Egyptian party can bring these ancient icons to life and is an excellent way to celebrate a child’s birthday or spend time with friends of all ages.

InvitationsLet the invitations set the mood for your party by using your creativity. Just like the decorations and activities, the possibilities are endless for ways to get guests excited about the event. Create scroll invitations and roll them up with gold ribbon or design sarcophagus cards so when they’re open a mummy can be found lying inside. Use gold, black, sand or papyrus paper and tear the edges for an ancient appearance. Dying your invitations with tea bags is also a great way to add authenticity.

Fill in the party’s information and request your guests wear Egyptian costumes. From Cleopatra, pharaohs and mummies to Mark Anthony and Roman goddesses, everyone can make or find a costume perfect for them. Costumes help guests get lost in the theme and make it a memorable event for them.

DecorationsWhether it’s a birthday party, family event or a gathering of friends, gold and black streamers or balloons are a festive and inexpensive way to decorate your space. Cardboard cutouts of pyramids or sarcophaguses are great for the walls as well as Egyptian hieroglyphics. Place fake snakes, gold coins, treasure and jewels around the tables. Pictures of Cleopatra, King Tut or mummies also make cheap decorations.

During the winter, some places have an indoor beach party. If space and budget allow it, bring Egypt’s dry landscape to you by bringing sand inside. Holding the party at a local park with sand is also a fun choice for a child’s party.

ActivitiesOnce you begin to brainstorm, you’ll discover a variety of ways to keep guests entertained. Here’s a short list to get your started. For a child’s party, create bingo cards with Egyptian images, race to see which team can build a pyramid out of blocks or mummify a team member with toilet paper the fastest. Play Egyptian music and have a contest to see who can walk like an Egyptian the best. Create an archeology dig by placing clues throughout your house. Read stories about legendary Egyptian pharaohs like King Tut, Cleopatra or Alexander the Great. You can give just about any classic party game an Egyptian twist.

FoodWhat’s a party without food? Serve your guests a variety of chocolates, fresh fruit, finger sandwiches, cheese, bread, punch or wine. A pyramid-shaped cake is also easy to make for a birthday party and the web is full of delicious Egyptian recipes.

Now that you’ve got your brain thinking, leave behind the cold and snow and embrace the Egyptian culture by hosting a theme party!
